Filed under: Family — admin @ 8:35 pm

OK I glossed over a big event we had in May …. Ellie hit double digits - she is now 10 years old!

We did not do a whole lot as she wants to go to ADVENTURELAND for her birthday…. we’ve put it off all summer (we’ve been busy) but I have the tickets and her and friend and I will be out and going to the amusement park on Saturday unless it rains.  Sadly this means I miss my fantasy football league draft…. arghhh

Ellie was pretty happy with turning 10…

Sadly the only horse she got was the cake  :(

Last One’s in the Books for 2008

Filed under: Triathlon?? WHAT!?!?! — admin @ 8:28 pm

Wow - I did it - yes another triathlon.  This one was a true sprint tri.  500 meter swim, 15 miles on a bike and a 5 k run (3.2 miles).

I did the Hickory Grove Triathlon this past Sunday even though I had a double ear infection and a sinus infection.  I swam great (for me) and the girls showed up just in time to see me stagger  sprint out of the water and up the hill into transition.  The swim here is 50 meters longer than Shawnee mission and I did it much faster (13:12 compared to 14 something for Shawnee Mission).  I did feel like dying when I got out of the water and ambled slowly up the hill.  It is always nice when you are going up a nice stick free area of the course and a spectator stands right in your way to get a picture …. really come one - you have shoes on — one step off to your right and I’m home free…. but alas…. was not to be!

all the results are here

Swim (13:12) - great swim - If I would’ve sighted better I would’ve been out even faster.  felt a lot more contact then normal but nothing got me out of my race.  I even drafted for a fair hunk off of someone doing the back stroke…

Transition 1 (2:27)- ok this is the first race with no socks whatsoever… and it went well - got into transition and got geared up pretty quick - but getting up the hill about killed me! Then my bike looked like it got knocked into or over… out and on to the course pretty quick….

Bike (54:31) - I relied on Shannon’s recollection of the course and thus spent the entire first lap (of three) learning the gears I needed to be in to be most effective.  Top speed was 30.8 mph and I pushed that in two different places.  Averaged 17.1 mph.  I think I would’ve been faster but I got on the bike and heard this hssssssssssssssssing noise…. first thought was a flat…. nope.  My brake got bumped and readjusted into my wheel.  so for the first 4 miles it rubbed the entire time…. so once I got it moved off my wheel I had a much easier time.  So next year on this race I hope to drop time on this portion!

Transition 2 (1:13)- another first - undid my shoes and hopped off barefoot.  It ROCKED…. saved me a ton of time and allowed me to think about one less thing!  I really enjoyed that move.

Run (40:55)- here is where I am disappointed because I really wanted to push myself and see if I could make myself suffer.  I thought I was pushing pretty hard but I was only doing 13:12 miles … better but still was hoping for sub 13 minute miles.

Finish - it was GREAT - Shannon had Ellie and Grace there and they had cowbells out - Ellie and Grace yelled for me on every bike lap and in transitions (Shannon missed me a couple of times - uhn?).  Anyhow at the end - Ellie really motivated me and she and Grace ran the last bit in the grass with me and helped get me over the finish.  I could hear people cheering for people coming up and I was sick of being passed.  I was totally gassed and my legs were in a rhythm that felt easy and comfortable.  I sprinted maybe 30 yards with the girls help but no one passed me!  I owe those two little ones an extra big hug for that!

Over all I was 21 out 22 in the Clydesdale division.  Total time 1:52:15 - I wanted to beat 14 minutes on the swim, 55 minutes on the bike and 45 minutes on the run with less than 2 minutes on all transitions.  Well failed on the 2 minute transition (did I say we had to run up a big hill??) but killed my overall time goal - I wanted to beat 118 minutes and I did it in 112:15.  In other words I wanted to beat 1 hour 58 minutes and I killed it!! Absolutely demolished it - by the run and the swim.  I met all my other goals - have fun, finish, don’t finish last, don’t finish last in my group (this was CLOSE).

I loved the distances and want to get a couple more sprint’s in next year!!

good news is - I can now catch up on my blogging!!

Shawnee Mission Triathlon results

Filed under: Triathlon?? WHAT!?!?! — admin @ 7:45 am

First - a huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out - the wife, kids, sister, nieces and nephews, parents, my brother-in-law Nate (and his puppy) and even THIS GUY showed up!

Second - I did this course fairly well I thought.  The air temp was 63 and water was @ 80.

SWIM:  The swim was a challenge as some guy kept passing me then going into a breast stroke to catch his breath.  I don’t think he wanted the fat guy to pass him.  Finally I just swam up and over him while he was breast stroking straight instead of making a turn - and that was the last I saw of his nose-plugged face….. man I was TICKED OFF at him!

  • I really wanted to hammer the swim and get out in 15 minutes or less
  • I did the swim in 14:30 and that was 17th in the Clydesdale division.  Here’s the thing - I think I can do it faster if it is a straight out and back course!
  • I let that guy get into my race instead of just doing my race…..

BIKE:  As many can attest the Shawnee Mission Tri bike course was a hilly beast.  I really thought I handled it well.  My hill rides here prepped the legs - but I still slowed down too much on the up hill climbs.

  • I wanted to do the bike in 45 to 50 minutes depending on heat and humidity
  • I did it in 52 Minutes and 47 seconds - Arghhhhhhh
  • My legs felt good - but my feet rubbed in the socks.  I am following my coaches advice - sock-less training now!
  • My top speed was 38.9 MPH ….. let me restate - 38.9 freaking MILES PER HOUR!!
  • I really enjoyed going that fast…. if you couldn’t tell.
  • I was pleased with the time and think as I get more knowledgeable what gears to spin at I will do better on hilly course

RUN:  I hate running and just wanted to run this @ 13 1/2 minute mile pace  which is 43 minutes 12 seconds or so….then I remembered this is not a 5K - so my time needs to be right around 35 minutes…. the course had 2 bad hills - one short but steep and one long one to climb to the end.  I passed a guy who stopped to puke and never passed me back.  That happened in the first stretch before the first hill.  The first hill was steep and I could barely make it up it - I literally wanted to cry.

  • I wanted to complete in 35 Minutes
  • I completed in 32 Minutes and 2 seconds
  • Holy Schnikes I made up time on the run!! NICE
  • My pace was 13:02
  • I am doing some interval training now to improve that.
  • In the last half mile I got passed by a former student/softball athlete - way to go Eileen Horn! HA!

Transitions:  There was a long run UP HILL from the swim and I was at the back end to get out on the bike - but close to the run exit.

  • T1 from swim to bike was 2 minutes 45 seconds - was hoping for under 2 on each
  • T2 from bike to swim was much better 1 minute 16 seconds
  • It all averaged out
  • Guy next to me did not show so I had an end slot and the rack mates were all pretty nice!

TOTAL TIME: 1:26:03

  • My goal was under 1:30
  • I made it by almost 4 minutes
  • I had a lot of fun on the bike
  • I learned a lot!

Overall it was a fun morning - the kids did the flap jack run - well except Grace who wrecked coming out of the blocks (someone fell in front of her) and Ellie sprinted one lap then stopped because that was all she thought she had to do…. Emily and Alex did well - Alex looks like a long distance runner with an easy stride and Emily sprinted like a jack rabbit on that second lap…. so even the nieces and nephews got involved!

the one thing about the race was the number of riders who had no helmet on - they had them strapped to bags, etc…. but rode before the race and after all over the place with NO HELMET….. which is generally not allowed.

Next year I told Nate he could do the run…. because I hated the idea of running it almost as much as I hated doing the run.  I have also told Mike he can do the bike - so get on it guys!!

sorry about the logging in

got tired of deleting porn entries from old posts….. so I am hoping this curbs the attempts…. once it does I may remove the logging in step.  That or I need a step that has me approve all links before it posts….. can I do that?

Yes this is a call for free technical support that is probably DUH easy!
